Texas 10: Selecting the top 10 student-athletes at The University of Texas is always a challenging endeavor, particularly when you consider those illustrious performers who’ve been named to the prestigious list over the years – names like Cat Osterman, T.J. Ford, Aaron Peirsol, Sanya Richards and Kevin Durant. But, year in and year out, Texas continues to produce superb athletes across all men’s and women’s sports. This year was no exception, as 11 supremely talented athletes – split almost evenly among males and females – comprise the honorees. Take a look, and see how our list matches up against your own Texas 10.
Yin & Yang: If there’s one thing that’s been consistent about the 2009 Longhorns, it’s been the team’s dominant pitching staff, from starters like Chance Ruffin, Brandon Workman, and Cole Green – all sophomores – to the team’s superb closer, Austin Wood. But, putting together a top-flight staff requires more than just healthy and talented arms: it requires the kind of coaching that can exploit that talent. Fortunately for Texas, two men representing very different philosophies combine in one zen-like approach to the craft that has the Horns at the top of the Big 12 standings: pitching coach Skip Johnson and head coach Augie Garrido.
